Good Writing — Something We Can All Do
This is my presentation from earlier in the week on good writing, with a few changes for the better. This was created on the Mac using Keynote, but you can also export as Powerpoint. I actually exported as a .pdf because that seemed to work best for uploading it to slideshare.com, the youTube of slideshows. (Thanks to Jumbo for the alert!) Once it's up on Slideshare, you can copy the embed code into the html of your blog post.

Audio #1: DO NOT BLOW INTO THE MICROPHONE!
Hi Guys! This is all the stuff I talked about yesterday for your reviewing pleasure. Good luck with your interviews today and don't forget it's always better to get it right the first time than to try to fix it later.
DO NOT BLOW INTO THE MICROPHONE!
This will damage the microphone
Use the wind screen to reduce potential damage to the microphone
When you turn the recorder on:
Make sure the quality is set at 44.1k (3)
44.1k = CD's, music recording
mp3 = low quality, small file size
48k = DVD, for synchronizing with film and video
96k = Only liars can hear the difference between this and 48k
Make sure the Recorder is in stereo mode
the mode light is on
Up to 2 external microphones can be connected to the recorders on the bottom, but this is not necessary for our purposes
DO NOT BLOW INTO THE MICROPHONE!
This will damage the microphone
Put headphones into the PHONES jack
Do not use the LINE OUT jack. It will be too quiet for you to hear. It is designed for connecting the recorder to speakers.
When recording press REC once to check your level
level should peak between -12 and -6 on the meter
every time your hit 0 you will get distortion
If we were using analog tape you would get partial distortion when ever you get near 0.
Because we are recording digitally your sound will become totally distorted if your signal reaches 0
use the MIC switch on the right to adjust microphone sensitivity. MEDIUM is recommended.

Press REC again and recording will start
notice fill name STE-000.wav
I advise you to keep a log of which files contain which interviews. It will make things much easier when it comes time to edit.
Stop recording by pressing REC again
DO NOT BLOW INTO THE MICROPHONE!

Listen to what you have recorded by pressing up on the menu button
This will loop all the recordings on the recorder
Press the menu button right to skip ahead, hold to fast forward
Press the menu button left to skip back, hold to rewind
When recording you want people to talk ACROSS the microphone NOT directly INTO the microphone
hold the microphone just below the mouth
Holding the microphone too close to the mouth causes Proximity effect
Proximity Effect causes extra bass frequencies on your recordings
It may sound cool sometimes but too much bass (as well as extremely high frequencies) can cause ear fatigue and people will turn your show off
DO NOT BLOW INTO THE MICROPHONE!

Blogging Homework Assignment 2
For those of you using your own laptops and not the idebate ones you must install the following software so you can edit your blogs properly.
The first software is called firefox:

(it is a internet browser)
the second is called flash
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
(it is a plugin that allows you to view video over the internet)
Finally visit and look at your classmates blogs

If you have not emailed your blog address yet that is why it is not up there.
Please if you have not done it as yet do it as soon as possible
If you do decide to change your blog address you must email me the new one so the teachers can look at it and it can be posted on the buddy list so the other students can see it.
